What?

Night Watch Project.

So What?

The focus of this project is exploring Film Noir. Film noir is a very specific genre, highly stylized and theatrical. We will take inspiration from one of the movies below:

– The Cabiet of Dr. Caligary (1920 – Dir. Robert Wiene)

–  M (1939 – Dir. Fritz Lang)

–  The Big Sleep (1939 – Dir. Howard Hawkes)

–  Double Indemnity (1944 – Dir. Billy Wilder)

–  The Third Man (1949 – Dir. Carol Reed)

We are ask to produce and develop one high quality final outcome supported by a body of preparatory work, taking the inspiration from one frame.

Night Watch / RESEARCH 1

I start watching all the movies and making print screen for each frame which inspire me.

1. “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligary” is a 1920 German silent horror film, from a screenplay by Hons Janowitz and Carl Mayer. It is one of the most influental films in the German Expressionist movement and it is “the first true horror film” (Roger Elbert).

2. “M” is a German drama, thriller, directed by Fritz Lang. “M” is considered a precursor to the film noir genre.

“M” is for Murder and it was used by authorities as a sign. They put it on the potential child-killer’s shoulders.

After watching all this movies I started to do research in LRC and on line.

I found very exiting some art work from “Vitamin 3-D: New Perspectives in Sculpture and Installation” by Pedrosa A., Hoptman L., Hoffman J., Phaidon 2009

2014-10-11 01.29.53
2014-10-11 01.30.39 2014-10-11 01.38.12 2014-10-11 01.37.50 2014-10-11 01.34.09 2014-10-11 01.33.39 2014-10-11 01.32.05 2014-10-11 01.39.04 2014-10-11 01.40.12 2014-10-11 01.41.14 2014-10-11 01.41.53 2014-10-11 01.42.44-2

Now it is the moment to choose my final frame and I had to choose from few frames which inspired me from the movies:

Screenshot 2014-10-08 18.01.26

This frame is from “M” and I like the architectural way how is presented the area where they will search for the killer.

Screenshot 2014-10-08 17.59.38

This is another frame from “M” which represent a fingerprint projection, I like the circular way of the crease in the skin and is again an architectural way to present. They basically create a map on this fingerprint who looks like an vortex.

Screenshot 2014-10-08 17.38.06

This is a frame from “M”, where I like the geometry, this kind of projection in space, it send me in a descriptive geometry mood. It is kind of circular square.

Screenshot 2014-10-11 00.52.59

I choose my final frame from “The Third Man”, this frame is like a vortex with a proper projection in space, where I see lights, rotation and organic shape.

After I decided to use some words like Organic, Lights/ Shadows and Space I started to create some sketch models using paper.

For my first sketch model I was thinking to linked it with “Organic” word:

20141012_172757

I create some circular and natural/ organic shapes.

For my second sketch model I linked it with “Lights/ Shadow” and I start to imagine something like a vortex with a light inside which will project different shadows outside the model.

20141012_173916

20141012_174235

I experimented different shadows using different angles for lighting. Considering the dimension of area who was cut, the light projection start being very exiting.

20141012_174254

20141012_174328

This last sketch model was linked with “Space” and I started to fold paper trying to create some separation in space.

20141012_175847

After all this sketch models I started to draw some sketching according with movies or words:

I start to use some theatrical abstract forms being inspired by “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligary”

2014-10-13 23.36.32

Here are two rotations in different way and in the same time, I think a projection with bought rotation could be an interesting visual at the end.

2014-10-13 23.37.12

In next drawing my idea was to create some musical sketch which can be transformed in a 3D musical model.

2014-10-13 23.37.34

My first presentation for this project is in power point format and should contain a justification for my choice of film, with 30 second that I choose to focus and why?, 3 key words, evidence of viewing more then one movie, initial sketches and sketches models.

I choose my final frame from “The Third Man” movie and I start making some research for some movie split software. I choose AVS Video Editor Software considering the rating and the feedback that it has.Screenshot 2014-11-27 16.11.15

I split 30 second with the final frame and I start to create the presentation in power point:

Screenshot 2014-11-27 16.15.05 Screenshot 2014-11-27 16.15.08 Screenshot 2014-11-27 16.15.11 Screenshot 2014-11-27 16.15.14 Screenshot 2014-11-27 16.15.16 Screenshot 2014-11-27 16.15.18 Screenshot 2014-11-27 16.15.20 Screenshot 2014-11-27 16.15.22 Screenshot 2014-11-27 16.15.23 Screenshot 2014-11-27 16.15.24 Screenshot 2014-11-27 16.15.26 Screenshot 2014-11-27 16.15.27 Screenshot 2014-11-27 16.15.29 Screenshot 2014-11-27 16.15.31

After this presentation we make some brainstorming for finding the perfect 3 words linked with the final frame:

2014-11-27 16.26.39

My final words are Organic, Rhythmic and Radiance and starting from them I create quick sketches from each:

Organic:

2014-11-27 16.28.43

Rhythmic and Radiance:

2014-11-27 16.28.56

Night Watch / RESEARCH 2

For research part 2 we are expected to have a final single frame, 3 defined key words, 3 words defined exploration (sketches, sketch models), play with scale and size, how you may (not) interact with design responses, evidence that you made links to artist.

I decided to not change my final frame, the “rotating” stairs from “The Third man” and my final 3 words are Organic, Rhythmic and Radiance.

Screenshot 2014-10-11 00.52.59

I started my exploration and research for each word:

This picture in the middle of nature with trees is intriguing me. I would like to create something starting by nature. I was  profound impressed when I saw Sagrada Familia by Antony Gaudi and his starting point for his masterpiece was nature:

Basically he start from a tree shape and create columns with different shapes exactly how nature is with no rules.

After my research, I started to make another few sketch models.

I was thinking to use some bools to can create some organic shapes using different materials

2014-10-17 22.52.59

I thought that it is a good idea to use a bool as a foundation and to organize different shapes on it and then to remove the bool and see what is happen.

2014-10-17 23.02.18

I removed the ball and I really wasn’t happy with the result, of course I used some materials which is really not working for creating a pattern but it helps me to create an idea about it.

Considering my final frame I was thinking to create a space with an external vortex and tu use some light from up to down. I play with scale using a person at scale 1:20.

2014-10-17 23.17.31

After this one I realize that a rotation with some stairs or toboggan could be interesting as a visual impact and I start cutting cardboard to see how it looks:

2014-10-17 23.44.05

2014-10-17 23.51.39

I used the spiral cardboard and I add a musical note being inspired from my initial sketches where I used some musical sketches.

2014-10-18 00.09.07

I used a scale 1:100 to can feel the space and how it works.

After that I used scale 1:20 and added more accessories (few small balls, cigarettes and sticks), just trying to create a complete piece.

2014-10-18 00.40.39

It is absolutely not representing me, is really boring and I want something more, more complex and with more creativity.

2014-10-18 00.43.12

I came back to my idea to create a pattern, I love Zaha Hadid creations and I am thinking to use some circles and ovals shapes by paper to start a design for my final model.

2014-10-18 15.25.16

2014-10-18 16.03

I cut black and white different size of paper and I use a big ball as a background just to see how the contrast is and if is working or not. For the firs time in this project I start to like what I see and I continued to add circles.

2014-10-18 16.12.10 2014-10-18 16.12.26

I like the idea but still something is missing, I can not define exactly, maybe is to uniform and monotonous as a visual. So I decided to add some different ovals because I think there are too much paper and the image is not defined how I expected.

2014-10-18 16.45.19

Now, I am pretty happy with what I see but I have to find a solution for fixing. For sure I’ll have to use a different paper, more stronger.

2014-10-18 16.46.19 2014-10-18 16.46.53

I continued to organize all papers and to cover the ball, this is really helping me to understand if is what I want and if is working or not.

2014-10-18 16.55.37 2014-10-18 16.55.52

Now, I have an idea about the pattern, I have to think what can I use as a support because I don’t like a ball, I need something unconventional as a shape. I started to draw some sketches maybe is helping me.

2014-11-28 22.35.00 2014-11-28 22.35.18

After this drawing I realize that I need to create a support first in an organic shape which will help me to organize the pattern.

I remembered about Pinata, where people are using a balloon and start stick on it paper and after the pattern is dry I can broke the balloon and the pattern if is strong enough will stay in that shape.

I bought balloons and I start to work:

Screenshot 2014-11-28 23.32.16

I stick different shapes on the balloon and I let them to dry, after that I stick it again trying to make it stronger. After I glued 3 times in same area and I thought that there are strong enough, I broke the balloon.

2014-11-10 10.38.01 2014-11-10 10.39.10

Apparently it wasn’t a bad idea, I can use different types of balloons and I can create a really nice deformed shape using a balloon.

I changed the background to see how it looks as a contrast.

2014-11-10 10.39.37 2014-11-10 10.39.59

Now, I started to create some sketches with different types of balloon shapes. Or maybe using few balloons for a final model, organized in a different size and shapes but in the same time to looks like proper piece of art.

2014-11-28 22.35.29

Here, I was thinking to use 3 balloons but to create different pattern on each:

2014-11-28 22.35.38

In picture below I was thinking to use 2 balloons and to create a contrast, a positive and a negative part. Because in my final frame I can see a rotation, I am thinking to make my model to rotate, so is really important how it looks from each part if it will rotate.

2014-11-28 22.35.51 2014-11-28 22.36.05 2014-11-28 22.36.19

Now, I start making some research about some perpetuum mobile mechanism or some robots by paper. I draw some mechanism which I consider to use for my final model. The rotation could be horizontal of vertical.

2014-11-28 22.36.35

For Night Watch/ Research 2, I did a power point presentation as you can see fallow:

Screenshot 2014-11-29 00.11.43 Screenshot 2014-11-29 00.11.46 Screenshot 2014-11-29 00.11.49 Screenshot 2014-11-29 00.11.52 Screenshot 2014-11-29 00.11.54 Screenshot 2014-11-29 00.11.55 Screenshot 2014-11-29 00.11.57 Screenshot 2014-11-29 00.11.59 Screenshot 2014-11-29 00.12.01 Screenshot 2014-11-29 00.12.02 Screenshot 2014-11-29 00.12.07 Screenshot 2014-11-29 00.12.14 Screenshot 2014-11-29 00.12.20

Coming back to my idea to use a pattern and a support for it. My final point in developing idea was:

2014-11-10 10.39.59

and as you can see it doesn’t look professional.

I started to draw some balls using part of my pattern:

2014-11-29 00.35.08

I start again making some model sketches:

2014-11-10 11.28.20 2014-11-10 11.28.59 2014-11-10 11.29.22 2014-11-10 11.29.34

Now, I want to push the idea to something more professional and I decided to use Laser Cutter and cardboard.

I draw circles and ovals with different shapes in Adobe Illustrator and I use Laser cutter. This should look more professional and closer with what I want.

2014-11-11 15.04.10

2014-11-11 15.08.37

I started to organize and to create my final model:

2014-11-12 13.40.13

At the beginning I started with base and after that I build on it as yow can see below:

2014-11-12 17.03.20

Step by step, start looking better and better.

This part was really difficult because I didn’t expected to stick 2 days. It was really hard because I used glue for each circle and I have to keep each piece to dry considering the structure. I want to be more clear with space between pieces and for this I had to be very careful with each piece and to clean proper extra glue before to dry.

Now I almost have a part of my final model, but because laser cutter wasn’t clean proper, now, I have to paint because every piece have brown area and is not a nice vintage brown to can consider to let it like this.

Considering the structure, I will have to use white spray color to fix this problem.

I used dirty room in university and I let it to dry until next day.

In this moment, I have the model but is not rotating. I was thinking to buy something which I can use or rotation and I found this:

2014-11-13 15.53.20

I decided to broke all the toys to can use only the mechanism and of course to stop the music because it will not be a Christmas exhibition.

2014-11-13 15.53.44

Using this mechanism, I start to work with my model.

Starting with my 3 words, I have “Organic” (shape), I have “Rhythmic” (way of organizing) and I need “Radiance” (light and shadows).

I managed to have a light projection and an professional camera to can see how shadow is working with rotation.

2014-11-13 17.02.04

Because my model have big free spaces, I realize that I really need a powerful light to can create a powerful visual impact.

I was almost happy at this point, when, I realized that the rotation mechanism is working 1 minute and after that I have to push it to work another 1 minute. Which means that in the final exhibition I will have rotation 1 minute and after each minute I have to go to the model to make it works.

Extremely disappointed, I start to consider to use Arduino Open Source Platform. Which with a software you can interact with your model.

Here I had a lot of trouble because I started to have another few ideas and I was thinking to make a projection with rotation instead a model with rotation.

And I started to make some research and I found different static object who have different projections on it.

As you can see, this principle is not really hard, I just have to make photo to my model and to start editing in Photoshop each frame exactly how I want to be the final design.

But for doing this, I need more time, it means 4 picture editing per day, I need approximately 4 months for 30 seconds of movie with projection.

Another problem with my model was that I h     ave organic shapes and it is really difficult to fix any projector on it considering the distance and how small are my pieces which create my model.

I decided to came back to rotation and to use a proper light for shadow because I really want a powerful visual at the end.

I came back to Arduino, where I decided to use a sensor for people detection and when somebody is closer then 1 meter, the model it starts rotating.

Sylvia gave me the Arduino book and I fixed all the circuits for sensor and rotation. She gave me a motor with a 180 degree rotation which means that I have to rewrite the software code to create a 180 degree rotation with a round trip. Sylvia helped me with the code and with the sensor. After 2 days working with Sylvia and Arduino, I had a model and a mechanism.

Now, of course I have to find a solution to make it works together. Because the mechanism is really small, the motor has 2 cm and my model’s base diameter has 40 cm.

As you can see below, there is my motor who have to rotate the model.

2014-11-15 01.53.41

My solution for this was to incorporate the motor in a bigger cardboard and I used 4 cardboard to can fixed it.

I have to find a solution with not glue, or something which can not be replace after, because all the mechanism should be returned to university.

At the other side, I have the support for my model who is attach to motor and this one is small too. Basically this small cross should rotate 40 cm square of model.

2014-11-15 16.53.45

This one, I decided to incorporate in paper too, to can have a bigger surface with force and to can have a proper rotation for my 3D model.

2014-11-15 17.01.00

Here is the movement sensor, which should be somewhere in front of the model to can detect people.

2014-11-15 17.01.40

I paint in black the base of the model, because I want a contrast to can define the model.

2014-11-15 16.38.10

Here was the  moment when I decided to use a box for all the mechanism, I want a professional model at the end so I thought that this solution will help me to cover all the mechanism. In the same time it’s elevating the model and I can fix the movement sensor on the box.

2014-11-15 21.16.05

I covered the box in black and I start fixing the sensor.

In picture below is the top of the box with the mechanism.

2014-11-15 21.41.26

I let this space on the box to can work proper with Arduino, to can connect it to laptop if is necessary to change some parameters like the distance for starting to rotate when a person is close.

Because at that time I didn’t know exactly how the space will be at exhibition and I had to be prepared for any changes which could happen.

2014-11-15 22.36.27

Inside the box I fixed all the mechanism because nothing should move, and I will have to transport the model and I can not risk to go to the exhibition and to do not work rotation.

2014-11-15 22.46.37

After the box was ready, I fixed the model and I start looking for a solution for lights.

2014-11-18 15.45.08

I have some LEDs from Sylvia, and I was thinking to use it. I am not happy because I was expected to have a proper light at the end considering that I make all this mechanism to have a proper rotating shadow at the wall.

Unfortunately I couldn’t use the light from university so at this point of project, with a model and a concept based from light and proper shadow, I do not have a proper light.

I think this was my critical moment on this project when I started to speak with all tutors about this and even with Head of Art and Design who almost make me feel better, I thought that next day I will have a proper light. But not, I didn’t have a proper light and I start again to find a solution.

The problem here was that after I saw how it looks with a proper light, it was absolutely impossible to be happy with something less.

As I sad I had some LED’s from Sylvia and I tried to fix it on my box.

2014-11-15 15.14.59

Of course I bought batteries for LEDs and I try to create something with a nice visual and for the moment I fixed them with blue tag on the box as it shows in the picture below.

2014-11-15 20.20.25

This 4 LEDs in each corner of the box make the light diffuse and I lost the quality of shadow.

I went to photo workshop to make proper photos to my final 3D model:

1 2 3 4 5 6 8

10

ff1

ff2

ff4

I thought that 3 picture for exhibition is enough, I choose two different shadows and one picture more white.

At the beginning I want to use picture with a round background because I have circular shapes on model and I thought that it is a good idea to make it all to look as a same family.

1 2 3

But after I saw them, I was disappointed, it was looking like a funeral picture, I think it was too much, I really didn’t like them and I choose a classical simple one:

28 10

I used a black background for each.

Now is the moment to present the final exhibition.

20141121_112438

It was very interesting when I started to search about Viabizzuno and I realized that they are selling lights. This was really funny considering that I was looking for a proper light almost two weeks and I realized one day before that this place should have amazing lights.

20141121_132831

This is how I organized my space. I was looking for a space where I can make the projection. I think this was perfect for my model because I had one perfect wall for shadow and one wall full with lights. Unfortunately the existing lights doesn’t work for my model how I was expected but I choose to use my phone for this. All my work before with lights was using my phone but I really wasn’t expected do be so not professional at the end. I felt like I did nothing when I have to use my phone. I was so not prepared for this, because I thought that I can use some existing lights. It was better even if I had some box to cover my phone and to let see just the light.

I thought that university will help me with this light but for next time I have to be more prepared and not to expect something from university. This was a real lesson for me especially that I invested a lot of time in this project.

Here is how the projection was looking,
